Student Spotlight: How Online Learning Helps JC Turn Strategy into Success One Move at a Time

Stories & Spotlights

When JC sits down to play chess, he is calm, focused, and ready to think several moves ahead. The game that first caught his interest at age seven has become more than a hobby. It is a way of thinking, learning, and leading as he builds these skills through his experience with online learning at California Virtual Academies (CAVA).

A spark that became a passion

JC’s journey with chess began with a short book about how the pieces move. Years later, a chessboard he spotted at a store during the pandemic reignited his curiosity. With in-person events on hold, he began playing chess online and soon joined the K12 Esports League, which competes in chess, where his dedication quickly stood out.

JC has earned five championship chess titles in the league and recently won first place in the Under 1900 section of the Southern California Open, one of the largest tournaments sanctioned by the United States Chess Federation. Competing against players of all ages, he took home a $3,000 prize and a renewed drive to continue improving.

“Chess taught me that life is like the game itself,” JC said. “You either win or you learn. Every move matters, and every challenge helps you grow.”

Leading through example

JC does more than compete. He shares what he knows with others. As president of the Chess Club, he creates digital lessons to help fellow students understand openings, tactics, and strategy. He also serves as president of the Associated Student Body (ASB), National Honor Society, and National Technical Honor Society, guiding peers through collaboration and leadership.

He says that being a student at California Virtual Academies (CAVA) and learning in an online environment has given him the structure and support to pursue both academics and chess at a high level.

“With CAVA, I can access classes anywhere and lessons at any time,” JC said. “That helps me prepare for tournaments while staying on top of school. Whether I am traveling or studying, I can always stay connected.”

A mindset for the future

Every day, JC devotes an hour to studying chess and balancing lessons, meetings, and tournament preparation. Next on his schedule are the LA Open and the American Open, where he hopes to climb even closer to earning the title of National Master.

Looking ahead, JC plans to study accounting in college and dreams of becoming a chief financial officer or starting his own chess school. He believes the discipline, patience, and critical thinking he has gained through chess will serve him for life.

At CAVA, JC shows that success comes from dedication, focus, and a willingness to keep learning one move at a time.
