National School Choice Week Empowers California Families

As a parent, you want what’s best for your child, especially their education. With nearly six million K-12 students in California, no single school model can meet the diverse needs of every child. National School Choice Week is a time to recognize how giving families the ability to choose the right learning environment can be life-changing.
For some students, brick-and-mortar schooling simply isn’t the best fit. Maybe your child needs a more adaptable schedule, access to specialized programs, or a supportive and tailored learning space. School choice ensures that every student has an opportunity to thrive, no matter their circumstances.
Transforming Lives Through School Choice
At California Virtual Academies (CAVA), we’ve seen firsthand how the right learning environment can open doors for students. Gianna Fenner, an 18-year-old artist, is a perfect example. She struggled with academic anxiety in a brick-and-mortar school setting, but when she transitioned to CAVA, she found a space that nurtured her strengths. With the support of her teachers and the freedom to focus on her passion, Gianna thrived—winning a national “My Senior Reel” competition and earning a scholarship to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
Kylie Mori, a seventh-grader, faced bullying in her previous school. At CAVA, she not only found a safe learning environment but also discovered her passion for photography. With the encouragement of her teachers, she entered the K12 Photography Competition and won first place. Stories like Gianna’s and Kylie’s remind us why school choice matters: it gives students a chance to find their voice, build confidence, and reach their full potential.
A Growing Demand for More Options
More and more families are searching for alternative education options that better fit their needs. A 2024 National School Choice Awareness Foundation survey found that 72% of parents nationwide explored new schooling options, with California leading the way. The COVID-19 pandemic only reinforced the need for learning environments that align with each student’s unique needs.
For many families, online learning provides the adaptability, safety, and tailored instruction that help their children excel. Some students need a quieter space to focus, while others benefit from a curriculum tailored to their academic strengths. Others balance school with athletic training, artistic pursuits, or personal challenges. School choice allows families to find a path that truly supports their child’s success.
Addressing California’s Education Challenges
CAVA is proud to provide scalable, high-quality learning solutions. Our students can explore STEM, the arts, and specialized programs designed to help them thrive. Through CAVA’s CAVA2College program, students can earn college credits while still in high school, giving them a head start on their future. Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways prepare students for high-demand careers while tailored learning plans support those with medical needs, athletic commitments, or unique academic goals.
A Brighter Future for California’s Students
Education is personal, and every child deserves the chance to learn in a way that works best for them. California is leading the way in empowering families to make informed decisions about their children’s education. As we celebrate National School Choice Week, we honor the impact that school choice has on students and their futures.
At CAVA, we are committed to helping families find the best educational path for their children. When students have access to a learning environment that meets their needs, they gain confidence, discover their passions, and build the foundation for lifelong success.
